Linux

Hello, Linux world!

Well, this is my first attempt at updating these pages since I switched my home machine to Linux. It took a bit of doing, and I'm still not all the way there (no printer, sound, or PalmPilot connection at the moment, and I'm waiting for the free upgrade to arrive in the mail before I'll be able to access my files from my Win95 drive), but I confidently expect that pretty soon now, I'll be able to purge my hard-drive from the evil that is Microsoft.
I'm not kidding about Microsoft being evil, although what led me to that conclusion I'll leave for another day. At the moment I'm digging into Linux, and trying to come to grips with the Unix/Linux way of doing things. It can be a bit frustrating: as many headaches as Microsoft's crappy programs have given me over the years, I do have a lot of time and energy invested in becoming proficient in them, and it's going to take a lot of time to get a similar level of proficency in the equivalent Linux programs. On the other hand, so far once I configure something correctly in Linux it just works, and continues to work no matter what else I do. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the entirely unexpected speed increase; intellectually, I knew that Windows was a pig, but I never realized how much of a pig until I ran Linux. I'm running the same machine, with the same modem, the same Internet Service Provider, and even the same browser software (Netscape Navigator), and my web access just flies: text pages pop up in the blink of an eye (graphics still take a noticable amount of time). It's like when I first went from a 2400 baud modem to 9600 baud; of course, that's subjective, I haven't actually run any timing tests, but considering that I wasn't even anticipating this benefit, I'm pretty darn happy with it. I'll keep you up to date with my adventures as I learn more, and I'll be back with some comic reviews tomorrow
